EYES on the best Sunglasses lenses

In the trade we call them sun lenses – but we know that most people call the sunglasses lenses. Jez has written this post about the latest advancement in sunglasses lenses and offers some advice about whether your EYES are best protected this summer

Most ‘Quality’ sunglass lenses offer “UV-400 or UVA, UVB & UVC Protection” filtering 100% of the UV (Ultraviolet) light. The UV filtered light passes through the lens and reduces a certain amount of visible light entering the eye, all dependent on the transmissibility of the coloured tints that are used.

Lenses containing melanin achieve all of the above, PLUS filter up to 97% of the high energy visible light HEV, which has proven to reduce long-term exposure to the retina and therefore, reduces probable damage contributing to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.

In addition, HEV light is high in energy making it far more scattered than other wavelengths of light. HEV light also attaches itself to moisture
particles in the air resulting in the formation of haze. Very few quality sun lenses contain this melanin however, TAVAT lenses drastically eliminates this haze effect, leading to enhanced contrast, truer colours & sharper vision.

EYES on St Albans is partnering with TAVAT to introduce this leading lens technology, only now being recognised as significantly important for both improved visual performance and long-term eye protection. Research over the past 40 years, by the leading centres of excellence for eyecare in America, validate the protection value of melanin.

EYES on St Albans and TAVAT acknowledge this research and have chosen
melanin enhanced lenses for all sunglasses… creating the perfect combination of performance, function, and design.

What is Melanin?

Melanin is the naturally occurring pigment found throughout the human body. Its role is to protect us against sunlight damage, by filtering Ultraviolet (UV) and High Energy Visible (HEV) light, better known as “Violet- Blue Light”. Melanin is, in fact, the best natural defence against the harmful effects of the sun.

TAVAT’s sunglasses lenses are infused with a synthetic melanin to provide the ultimate in eye protection, improving clarity, enhancing contrast, without any colour distortion. TAVAT’s sunglass lenses are inspired by the natural defences of the human body against the sun. The synthetic melanin acts in the same way as natural melanin, just like a shield against both UV rays and up to 97% of the harmful violet-blue light (HEV). This means higher protection and better performance at the same time.

The differences between regular sunglasses lenses and polarised sunglasses lenses are known – with the polarised ones being preferred by people who need to reduce glare – be that driving at night, being around water, on the beach or skiing. TAVAT offers both types of lenses, specific to performance needs, but ALL with the addition of melanin.

We have a huge range of frames in store suitable for use with TAVAT lenses. Do pop in and have a browse, or contact us to book an appointment for an eye test
