They (although we’re not sure who ‘they’ are but it’s often said!) say the eyes are the windows to the soul, and honestly, they might be onto something. Think about it—eyes don’t just help you see the world; they also let the world see you! Whether it’s joy, sadness, mischief, or the “I-need-coffee-right-now” look (you’ve seen Jez first thing haven’t you?), your eyes can give it away before you even say a word.
Tell us the truth
Have you ever tried to lie but your eyes gave you away? While your mouth is busy crafting a story about why you were late (traffic, obviously), your eyes are blinking at a suspiciously high speed, shifting left and right like they’re dodging laser beams. That’s because our eyes are hardwired to reflect emotions we can’t always hide.
Research shows that pupil size changes with emotion—dilate when you’re excited, shrink when you’re stressed. That’s why poker players wear sunglasses (need a pair? You know where we are). Not just for the cool factor, but to keep their eyes from revealing that they just got dealt a terrible hand.
The look of doom
Ever received “the look” from a parent, teacher, or partner? No words needed—just one glance and you know you’re in trouble. Likewise, ever had someone look at you with such warmth that you instantly felt safe and understood? That’s the magic of eye communication. Scientists believe that eye contact can create deep connections because of how much emotion they convey.
In fact, studies suggest that maintaining strong eye contact can increase feelings of trust and even attraction. No wonder romantic movie scenes always include some slow-motion, soul-piercing eye contact before the big kiss. That said, we know that if you’re neurodiverse, this can be incredibly difficult to do so please don’t worry if you’re in the shop and don’t want to look us in the face.
More hard truths
Not only do your eyes reveal emotions, but they also tell a story about your health and well-being. Ever noticed dark circles after a sleepless night? Or how your eyes get red and irritated when allergies strike? Your eyes are like tiny detectives, hinting at what’s going on inside your body.
Optometrists can even spot signs of serious health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or vitamin deficiencies just by examining your eyes. So when they say, “Let’s take a look,” they mean really take a look—right into your well-being. Our eyes often provide an ‘early warning system’ so that’s why remind you (with a virtual look of doom!) to come back for regular examinations
Taking Care of Your Soul’s Windows
Since your eyes do so much more than just see, they need looking after! Protect them with sunglasses (UV rays are sneaky – especially at this time of year), give them screen breaks (they weren’t designed for 10-hour Netflix marathons, boring, we know, but true), and eat eye-friendly foods like carrots, leafy greens, and fish rich in omega-3s.
