At EYES on St Albans, we know the look. That squinty, screen-weary stare. The “I’ve been in back-to-back Zooms and now I can’t remember what natural light feels like” expression as you arrive on the sunny side of Marshalswick wondering whether it’s appropriate to put your sunnies on when it’s not even that bright. Sound familiar? If your day is spent flitting between your laptop, your phone, and maybe a cheeky bit of telly in the evening, then your eyes are working overtime.
And while caffeine and posture-adjusting chairs might get all the workplace wellness glory, there’s an unsung hero that could make a huge difference to how your eyes feel at the end of the day: blue light filters.
So, what is blue light anyway?
Blue light is part of the visible light spectrum, naturally present in sunlight (which is great – we like the sun). But it’s also blasted out from digital screens – phones, tablets, computers, TVs – and in those concentrated doses, it can leave your eyes feeling tired, dry, and overworked. It can also disrupt your sleep, confuse your circadian rhythm, and make you feel like you’ve pulled an all-nighter just by answering a few emails.
But don’t worry – help is at hand (or rather, on your face).
Blue light filtering lenses can reduce the amount of this high-energy visible (HEV) light reaching your eyes. They work a bit like sun cream for your eyes – protecting them from potential long-term damage and helping you avoid that horrible end-of-day eye strain.
At EYES on St Albans, we’ve fitted loads of lovely local eyes with blue light filters (in utterly fabulous glasses frames obvious, not the eyes themselves!!), and the feedback is always the same: “I wish I’d done this sooner.” Whether you’re a student revising late into the night, a busy professional glued to a spreadsheet, or someone who just enjoys a good scroll – these filters can be a game-changer.
But here’s the thing: not all blue light filters are created equal.
Yes, you can get dirt-cheap versions online, often promising the world for a tenner. But be warned – those filters may not offer the proper optical quality, accurate filtering, or the kind of lens clarity you actually need. Some can even cause distortion, colour imbalance, or – ironically – eye strain.
That’s why it’s so important to get your blue light protection from a qualified, independent optometrist (oh, hello…!). We’ll make sure the lenses are properly fitted to your prescription, offer the right level of filtration, and still give you crisp, clear, comfortable vision. Plus, our blue light coatings are tough enough for everyday wear – no peeling, bubbling or weird tints.
AND… All EYES lenses have the Blue light filtrations build within the lenses material substrate and is NOT that additional horrible blue/purple bloom look from a cheaper blue light coating so your lenses remain beautifully clear of reflections when you’re on a call.
Treat your eyes like you treat your tech.
You wouldn’t put a budget screen protector on your brand-new phone and expect miracles. Your eyes deserve the same respect. So if you’re spending hours looking at screens – whether for work, play or trying to convince yourself that you’re only watching one more episode – do them a favour and pop in to see us.
Your eyes will thank you. Probably silently. But gratefully.
